Activities & Events in Alpe d'Huez

Indoor Activities

If you're searching for indoor activities, the Palais des Sports is the perfect destination. This expansive sports center offers over 20 activities, including swimming, badminton, squash, a gym with a cardio area, yoga and Pilates classes, a climbing wall, and much more. Remember to pack your gym kit and a swimsuit (guys- remember it's speedo-style only).

Looking for something a  bit more chilled? Maybe a massage is more for you. Whether your looking for a gruelling sports massage or opt for the more relaxing Swedish style, there are multiple spas to choose from to suit your preferences. There are also some yoga centres in the town where you’ll find an array go classes if you fancy a nice stretch out after time on the mountain.

In the town you’ll also find the Alpe d'Huez History and Archeology Museum, a cinema which shows some English speaking films and a bowling alley.

Outdoor Activities

There’s so much to do outside in Alpe d’Huez.

You’ve got your classic ski resort activities like the open air Ice skating rink, tobogganing and there’s a luge - although this one has a twist, there’s the option to decent with a virtual reality mask! You can also explore the Grotte de Glace, a purpose built ice cave, or have some fun dog sledding.

Hire a mountain guide to take you snow shoeing, ski touring and back country skiing; if back country’s you’re thing and you’re an expert skier or snowboarder then head to La Grave (around a 25 min drive from Alpe d’Huez). La Grave is arguably the world leader for lift-accessed off piste, we highly recommend going with a guide and be fully equipped with avalanche safety gear as this is a true expert-only resort.

If you fancy something a bit different, try your hand at ice climbing, glacier hiking or skijoring - hop of your skis and get pulled along by a horse!

For more adrenaline fuelled fun try paragliding or kick it up a notch and have a go in a  Gyrocopter. If you prefer your adrenaline action closer then why not try snowmobiling or get yourself behind the wheel and give ice driving a go. Get some drifts in on their purpose built ice track!

Fancy skiing in Les Deux Alpes? Start your morning with an 8-minute helicopter ride from Alpe d’Huez, spend the day on the slopes in Les Deux Alpes, and then take the helicopter back in time for dinner in Alpe d’Huez. What a perfect day trip! With a 6-day or more lift ticket, you get 2 free days of skiing in Les Deux Alpes.

Events

Tomorrowland: The winter brings festival-goers around the world stunning performances from over 100 of the best DJs on the planet, day and night, for fans of electronic music of all genres and types. There are stages installed on the slopes and in the heart of the resort which are all accessible to non-skiers and pedestrians too.

Trophée Mer Montagne TeamWork Alpe d’Huez: 15 teams made up of a sailor, a Mountaineer and a child from the resort compete for the Mer Montagne Trophy. The athletes compete in a friendly atmosphere in a multitude of events over 5 days at the end of January. You can support them on and off the mountain, go watch them on the slopes or attend a film screening or debate with the athletes themselves.

Sarenne Snowbike: If you’re in Alpe d’Huez at the end of the winter season (usually around mid April) then you can’t miss the Sarenne snowbike. Whether you want to take part or just watch the spectacle of mountain bikers making their way down the piste, starting at Pic Blanc and ending in Huez. Covering a descent of 16km and almost 2,000 vertical metres, it’s no small feat! One not to be missed.
