Alpe d'Huez is one of the seven resorts that make up the Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine; the fifth largest ski area in France. Thanks to having over 300 sunny days a year it has been nicknamed ‘Island in the sun’ so if it is sun and skiing you want then you have found the perfect resort.
From challenging blacks to wide blue and green runs, the 249km of skiing provides endless opportunities for all levels of skier and snowboarder. Advanced skiers looking for a challenge will want to head up to the glacier or take on the legendary black runs. Intermediates will find a great selection of runs spread throughout the entire ski area. Beginners are well looked after here at Alpe d’Huez as they have one of the largest nursery areas in the Alps with four free ski lifts.
The resort has great high altitude off-piste, so there are plenty of opportunities here for expert skiers and boarders looking to explore the mountain. Alpe d’Huez is also home to the world’s longest black run so try this out if you are feeling adventurous.

Advanced
Advanced skiers should head to the top of the Pic Blanc and Les Marmottes III ski lifts and try out the black expert runs from there. They definitely attract the adrenaline junkies and the more technically advanced skier should experience the vertical drop of 2200m. The legendary 16km black run is the Sarenne and will take you from Pic Blanc all the way to Alpe d’Huez.
Intermediates
A large selection of intermediate runs is spread throughout the whole ski area. For the more advanced intermediate, head to the challenging reds in the Villard-Reculas and Signal de l’Homme sectors. For even more of a challenge, try the 16km Sarenne black run. For less confident intermediate skiers, there are some great blue runs from the Signal sector heading town towards Alpe d’Huez. Or the long blue Champclotury run by the Poutran ski lifts.
Beginners
The Alpe d’Huez ski resort has one of the largest nursery areas in the Alps, and with three free lifts for beginners, it’s a great place to learn. The majority of the green runs are located just above the village. The Les Bergers area also offers plenty of wide and gentle runs so you will find your snow legs in no time.
Snowboarders
With few drag lifts and wide open runs, it is a great place for beginner snowboarders. For the more advanced boarder, there is plenty of terrain to get stuck into. Alpe d’Huez also has two terrain parks, an advanced one by the Babars chairlift and a beginner one located on the lower left-hand side of the Lac Blanc chairlift.
Off Piste*
For those wanting to explore off-piste, there is a great selection at Alpe d’Huez. The best place to find off-piste is from the top of the Pic Blanc glacier. These areas should only be attempted with a guide.
