Andorra
What do we love about skiing in Andorra?
Nestled between France and Spain, Andorra has long been renowned among the UK ski market as a low-cost, party-centric ski destination - but things have changed in recent years; after significant investment in winter tourism, Andorra has moved further upmarket and succeeded in shaking off it’s cheap and cheerful reputation. Now, with an impressive range of 2-5* hotels and apartments spread across its three main ski resorts, well-connected ski areas, high-end shops and a multitude of appealing bars and restaurants, Andorra provides a great alternative to those skiers more accustomed to holidaying in the Alps. Despite its transformation, Andorran ski resorts have managed to retain their unique Pyrenean charm and vibrant nightlife, and ski holidays in Andorra are not only a cultural experience, but the Spanish-influenced cuisine is a joy to the taste buds. Believe us when we say that nothing compares to some Sangria and Tapas after a long day pounding the slopes! Moreover, in Andorra your spending money can go a long way; as taxes are low, shopping is inexpensive and it’s worth checking out some of the fantastic designer shops in the affluent capital La Vella. Low costs also extend to the resorts meaning those piste-side lunches and apres beers will be comparatively cheaper than Alpine resorts.
Strikingly mountainous, Andorra boasts great scenery and great skiing. It would appear that skier’s interests were at the heart of Andorra’s renovation; which encompassed improved resort infrastructure, enhanced snow-making, and the addition of new lifts to ensure ski areas were well linked. Where’s best suited to your group however will depend on your ability levels; with an abundance of progressive ski terrain, the resort of Arinsal is ideal for beginners and intermediates, whilst Soldeu and Pas de la Casa - which share 210 kilometres of the extensive and well linked Grandvalira ski area - truly cater for all. Experts after some freeride would be well advised to check out Arcalis at the head of the valley – accessible by a bus ride from Arinsal.
Overall, with varied skiing, a great resort atmosphere and excellent value, Andorra does offer something for everyone and is a great option for skiers seeking a change of scenery from the Alps. Furthermore, Ski Weekends fly into both Barcelona and Toulouse meaning there is a fantastic choice of cheap flights available from the UK - ideal for a short ski break!
