Austria
What do we love about ski HOLIDAYS in Austria?
Austria is where the skiing we enjoy today all began in the early years of the last century, with the first people to try the 'modern' style of downhill skiing doing so in the Arlberg region, home to world famous St Anton. This resort is home to some of the planet's most exciting skiing and snowboarding and one of the top Austrian resorts where SkiWeekends holiday customers return year after year, for the skiing, the freeriding, and not to mention the apres.
On the slopes, Austrian ski areas have been busily inter-connecting over the decades so now they can offer some of the biggest ski regions in the Alps and with the world's leading lift company Doppelmayr are based here it's no surprise that they also have some of the comfiest and fastest lifts to whisk you back up the slopes after every run. Expect heated leather seats and weather protection as the norm - Austrians don't do things by halves.
Fortunately the same goes for those cosy mountain restaurants for which the country is famous. Locally run and serving up copious quantities of traditional cuisine, prepared and cooked on site using locally sourced ingredients, you'll not only be fully fuelled up for the day, you'll need to keep skiing or boarding to the last lift of the day to work it off before sitting down for dinner.
Austria also has a reputation for being a cheaper ski holiday destination than France, and to some extent that is true, but it also depends where you go, when you go and what you spend when you're away. We're big fans of Austrian resorts, Austrian Europop apres and some of the local region cuisine, such as Tirolergrolsch.

Austrians famously do après-ski better than any other nation too. A collection of lively bars will be found at the base of the slopes in every ski resort and here you can expect high spirits and free-flowing beer and wine from mid-afternoon onwards. In fact some places you need to get in early in order to ensure your place.
A ski holiday in Austria differs from France because it is home to more ski areas of all shapes and sizes than any other country including some of the biggest and best in the world. St Anton, already mentioned, is of course one of the best known and particularly recommended for advanced skiers and boarders who enjoy the off-piste terrain which many argue is the best in the world, as well as those who like to party all night after a hard day on the slopes – again many rate St Anton as having the best bars on the planet too.
Overall the choices for a long weekend in Austria is wider than anywhere else and it’s all yours!
