SKI Area
Kaprun, Austria is the ideal ski destination for all ability skiers. The Maiskogel mountain offers some fantastic family friendly tree-lined skiing and a nice respite between the trees when the weather comes in up on the glacier.
The Kitzsteinhorn glacier is the place to head in the Kaprun ski area and the speedy K-onnection gondola from the town centre which means you won't need to catch any buses to ski Kaprun's mighty high altitude glacier rising up to over 3,000m with stunning panoramic viewing platforms - it's well worth a visit even if you don't ski.
Whilst the majority of the glaciers slopes are wonderful intermediate runs there is a lower learning section as well as the recently opened Black Mamba piste. With a gradient of 32% this can be an exhilarating black slope and is proving popular already. The ski area has started to promote itself for freeriding (off-piste).
Beginners: Kaprun is perfect for newcomers, with dedicated nursery slopes near the village center and excellent instruction available from the Kaprun ski school. Beginners can progress to the gentle slopes of Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn Glacier as they gain confidence.
Intermediates: The Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn Glacier boast a variety of intermediate slopes, many of them wide and open, providing ideal terrain for intermediate skiers to explore.
Advanced: While Kaprun may not offer extensive options for advanced skiers, there are still exciting challenges to be found. The resort features wide-open pistes and challenging black runs, including some with demanding moguls. Additionally, Zell am See's Schmittenhöhe Mountain, accessible by ski bus, offers exhilarating pistes for advanced skiers.
Glacier Skiing: At an elevation of 3,030m, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier offers intermediate runs and fantastic freeriding terrain. Expert skiers can enjoy off-piste adventures, while there are also opportunities for ski touring and a terrain park for snowboarders.
Off-Piste: Head to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier for exceptional off-piste terrain, where you can carve through pristine powder snow surrounded by stunning natural scenery. For those new to off-piste skiing, there are marked routes and access to freeride information to ensure safety on the mountain.
