Dan Fox - Managing Director
"With a stunning journey to get there, often more snow than the French Alps, a ski-in, ski-out experience and plenty of pistes for a short break, Myrkdalen is well worth a look for a different kind of ski holiday."

Great for: Snow sure, non-ski activities, relaxed skiing, ski-in ski-out, sight seeing

Myrkdalen

Myrkdalen is one of largest ski resorts in Western Norway, and holds so much appeal: quiet slopes, no lift queues, huge amounts of snow, friendly English-speaking locals, a modern ski-in, ski-out hotel, loads of wonderful activities, runs for all abilities and an extensive backcountry area.

It is a family friendly, ski-in, ski-out area that also offers terrain parks, cross-country skiing, and children's areas. This ski-in, ski-out resort is based around the Myrkdalen Hotel and nearby apartments, and there is also a small grocery shop, café, three restaurants and an après ski bar.

In the heart of Fjord country the landscape in Myrkdalen is wild and unspoilt, and the resort is consistently ranked as having the highest annual snowfalls in Europe.

It's proximity to the coast means it is less cold than some resorts further East, making it a great destination for young families. You can easily tie in a stunning fjord cruise or breathtaking, scenic railway journey with your ski break to Myrkdalen, especially if you take the train from Bergen to Voss along the fjords (see more below).

Myrkdalen isn't a resort for rowdy apres ski - think more a quiet beer or glass of wine, or hot chocolate and a book by the fire. That said, you will find a great atmosphere at the Pudder Cafe & Bistro, particularly on the weekend. Kamben Cafe and Bar has great coffee and a variety of beers from local breweries.

There's plenty of non-ski activities to try out too, such as sledging where you take the last lift up and cruise down the empty slopes back to Myrkdalen. There's also snow rafting, horse sleigh rides, ice skating, snowshoeing tours, fitness classes and concerts throughout the winter.

Getting to Myrkdalen

BY CAR - Myrkdalen can be reached from Bergen Airport by car/taxi in 2 hours.

BY TRAIN - After experiencing the journey first hand, the Ski Experts here at SkiWeekends recommend taking the train from Bergen as it really adds to the overall experience of a holiday in Norway. From Bergen Airport a short tram ride takes you to Bergen main train station and from there it is a spectacular 1 hour 30-minute train journey to Voss. From Voss train station there is a free bus service to Myrkdalen. It is also possible to pre-book a private taxi for the 30-40 minute journey from Voss to the Myrkdalen Hotel.

Ski Area Overview

Whilst the official stats may tell you there are 30km of slopes, don't let the numbers or the piste map fool you, Myrkdalen's ski area is considerably bigger than it looks - especially if you're comfortable heading off-piste! There is plenty to explore, for all abilities, during a 3 or 4 night break here.

Myrkdalen is a family-friendly resort with a fabulous kids area with magic carpet and button on a wide open slope and some more progressive terrain through the forest. For those looking for more of a challenge the is an abundance of lift served off piste routes plus ski touring and back country skiing.
