ZERMATT - THE RESORT

Large Slop Zermatt

Zermatt is not only renowned for its world-class skiing but attracts year-round mountain enthusiasts with its challenging climbs and myriad of alpine recreation facilities. If you live and breathe snow sports, however, then Zermatt should certainly be on the bucket list. Try as we might, it’s difficult to name a place that provides the same high level of skiing, reliable snow conditions, traditional alpine charm, off-mountain activities and sublime mountain views– all wrapped up into a one truly unforgettable resort.

Village charm is certainly a key feature; with a mixture of modern hotels, ancient barns and traditional chalet-style architecture, the town has a remarkably unique character best described as a cosmopolitan contemporary-meets-the-traditional ambience. There’s a great deal to do off the slopes too, particularly on the main street where you’ll be spoilt for choice by restaurants, bars, boutiques and luxury designer shops. Although Zermatt displays a rather townie exterior, the village area is small enough to wander around by foot, albeit a little difficult in ski boots! This isn’t a problem though because there’s a free electric shuttle bus service that can get you from A to B in no time. In fact, the Zermatt streets are entirely car-free, populated only by electric buggies and shuttles.

All of this, of course, is overseen by the ubiquitous and iconic Matterhorn – a view almost as famous as the resort itself that’s striking impact stays with you long after leaving. Although generally considered as an expensive resort, accommodation does range from high-end luxury hotels to modest apartments and chalets, therefore, suiting a range of budgets. Foodies should also be very happy here; not only is Zermatt widely regarded as the gourmet capital of the Alps, but the eclectic mix of cafes and restaurants are enough to satisfy a vast array of taste buds. It does seem that Zermatt consistently ticks all of the boxes; in fact, if you were to close your eyes and imagine the perfect ski resort, it probably wouldn’t be too dissimilar to Zermatt.
